Character Shuffle Designs

As a warm up exercise to get all the creative juices flowing, I will open a fantastic app on my phone called "Character Shuffle" that was created by the legendary character designer Steven Silver. This application is similar to a slot machine, and it will rondomizes character traits like sex, species, occupation and much more. Then I set a timmer to 10 minutes to limit, and at the same time challenge myself. Below you will find some of the results!

Live Model Life Drawings

Below you will find a collection of live figure drawings from various model sessions. These drawing sessions are great practice to keep your skills sharp. I find myself drawing fewer real human people, and more often draw  cartoons, caricatures and anthropomorphic animal characters. I also love the flow of these sessions. They typically start with very quick gesture drawings that force you to quickly capture a model's pose. There is no time to think, but just enough time to capture the pose, energy or force of the character! Then as everyone gets warmed up each pose becomes longer, eventually ending with a 30 minute drawing pose that allows you enough time to detail out a full figure drawing.

Single "Frame" Illustrations

Often times while watching a movie or a TV show I find myself rushing to find the remote in order to press pause, and fully enjoy a single frame that speaks to me, or inspires me in a specific way. Maybe its the composition, or the color scheme. Perhaps it's the look on a characters face, or simply the emotion that a character has translated to the audience, often times without saying a word.
I decided to take these single frames and draw them as an exercise for myself. As an artist I often loose myself in my artwork and end up being too critical and spending too much time on a piece. This is even more true with personal projects, because I do not have a deadline. So with these exercises I wanted to limit my time to 1 hour to sketch or draw it, and 1 hour to ink or color it. Enjoy!
